COLOUR SPLASH - Playing with the Weather

COLOUR SPLASH. (2019)
Weather-changing playscape
Colour splash is a playscape that transforms in different weathers, where children can experience splashes of colours in the sun and splashes of water in the rain. The weather affects play. On a bright sunny day, children come out to play. But when the sky turns grey, children run away. Hence, we wanted to create a playscape that could adapt to the different weathers.

Our key structure is a panel that reveals coloured shadows under the sun and also serves as a shelter when it rains

Golden Pin Concept Award 2020 - Design Mark Top 60
There are 3 main zones: Free-running zone, Puddle area & the resting zone
Children can take a rest under the tree shadows on the leaf-shaped nets
When it begins to rain, children can hide under the leaf shelters and play with the water
Water is channelled from the leaf shelters and is collected into the spiral puddle
The leaf shelters are arranged in descending height to facilitate the collection of water
Inspired by the form of a leaf, the shelters are slightly curved in the centre and arranged in descending height in order to effectively capture a larger surface area of rain water to be stored for play in the day, enabling children to play regardless of weather

When the sun is out again, children can continue to play with the colours.
Aside from the children, residents living around get to enjoy a brighter and livelier view when they take a peek out of their window
There's no such thing as a bad weather,  only different kinds of good weather!
